Schneider Electric joins call to accelerate universal energy access
Rueil Malmaison– Avril 18, 2017 – At the third Sustainable Energy for All Forum (SEforALL) in New York on April 3-5, 2017, Schneider Electric joined forces with numerous other organizations to call for intensified partnerships between sectors in order to accelerate progress towards decentralized renewable energy access - specifically for low income households in rural areas. This objective is in line with Schneider Electric’s Access to Energy program, a pilar of the company’s sustainable development strategy.
More than 50 organizations met during the SEforALL event at a strategic meeting organized by government representatives (the Netherlands, Kenya and Nepal), private-sector companies (Schneider Electric and SELCO India) and civil-society organizations (Hivos, ENERGIA and SNV). The participants noted that at current trends, still 9% of the world’s population would not have electricity by 2030. Progress would need to be three times faster to reach the objective agreed by governments as part of the United Nations-led Sustainable Development Goals to have 100% of the worldwide population to access affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy.
The participants also agreed that an important way to accelerate universal access to energy is to join forces, share best practices and pool expertise to co-build new solutions. With the innovative technologies, numerous training programs and funding provided through its Access to Energy program, Schneider Electric will play a major role in this project.
“Schneider Electric, through its Access to Energy Program, is convinced that energy access is a basic human right. It is important for us to join this new initiative as it is the opportunity to gather all stakeholders and to find solutions to reach universal energy access,” said Gilles Vermot Desroches, Senior Vice President, Sustainability at Schneider Electric.
